SURFACE WARFARE OFFICER/ENGINEERING (SWO/ED) OPTION

Surface Warfare Officer?Engineering Option

Age: STA-21 SWO/Engineering Option selectees must be at least 18 years old and be able to complete degree requirements and be commissioned prior to age 35.  Waivers beyond age 35 will not be considered.

Gender:  Open to men and women.

Educational Requirements: Though a specific academic major is not specified, applicants are encouraged to pursue a Technical Degree in Engineering or Physical Science.

Medical Standards: STA-21 SWO/ED Option applicants must meet medical standards in accordance with the Manual of the Medical Department, Chapter 15.

Service Obligation: STA-21 SWO/ED Option selectees will incur a five-year active duty obligation upon commissioning. Additional obligated service may be incurred as a result of special training received following commissioning.

Appointment: Will be appointed Ensign, USN, Surface Warfare Officer Student, Designator 1160, upon graduation from college/university, with an Additional Qualification Designator (AQD) code Line of Accounting (LOA).

Officers will automatically be redesignated to 1460, Special Duty Officer (Engineering Duty) without further board action, upon completion of the Surface Warfare qualification, completion of two at sea Division Officer tours, and favorable record review screening by the Engineering Duty community manager. Upon redesignation to 1460, officers will incur a minimum service obligation of 2 years from date of designator change, to be served concurrently with any other obligations.

Officers who no longer desire to execute their option to redesignate to 1400 and desire to remain in the Surface Warfare community, must submit a written request to the Engineering Duty community manager, with copy to the SWO community manager.  The letter must be endorsed by the officer’s commanding officer.
